Antique Oak Lye produces an ammonia-smoked appearance to oak wood. The product reacts with the tannic acid in the oak making the wood darker. The look depends on the amount of tannic acid in the oak. The lye is often used to create a unique colour and vintage patina appearance that is achieved after 1-2 months.

Instructions
Products in use
The unfinished woodwork must be clean, dry and finely sanded (grit 100-120) before applying the lye.Wear suitable acid proof protective clothing, gloves and eye goggles for protection. On vertically mounted woodwork, apply from bottom to top.

Always remember to test on a less visible spot to check the compatibility of the surface with the product.

  1. Shake the container well and pour the Lye into a plastic bucket. It is important that no pigments are left in the container. Stir regularly during the application to prevent the pigments from settling to the bottom.
  2. Apply an even coat of the lye with the WOCA Applicator, a nylon brush or roller lengthwise along the grain. Apply at least 1 L of lye per 8-10 m²/L of wood. Leave wood to dry for approx. 3-4 hours at 20°C.
  3. Clean the floor with WOCA Intensive Wood Cleaner. Leave the floor to dry for at least 8 hours. The floor must be completely dry.
  4. De-nib standing fibres and remove excess pigments with a medium e.g. green or bordeaux, sanding polishing pad. Remove the sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner.
  5. Finish the wood surface with a WOCA oil.
Depending on the amount of moisture and tannin in the oak, the colour may vary. Sapwood does not change to a dark colour.
