Oil treatment of ThermoWood terraces

Advantages of ThermoWood

  1. Increased durability
The heat treatment reduces the wood’s ability to absorb moisture, which decreases the risk of rot and fungus.
  2. Dimensional stability
ThermoWood works less than regular wood and is therefore less prone to cracking and twisting.
  3. Beautiful, uniform color
The wood acquires a warm, golden-brown tone, which patinates beautifully over time if left untreated.
  4. Sustainable choice
The treatment is done without chemicals – only heat and steam.
  5. Low maintenance
Requires less maintenance than many other wood types – especially when treated correctly.

Choose the right oil for the terrace

Exterior Wood Oil is available in several colors, so you can easily customize the expression to your style and outdoor space:

  • Preserve the natural glow with a transparent oil that highlights the wood’s warm tone
  • Enhance the structure and grain patterns with a lightly pigmented oil
  • Give the terrace a new look with a more opaque color that creates a distinct and uniform expression
  • Regardless of your choice, the oil protects the wood from wind, weather, and drying out – while also extending the lifespan of your terrace.

How to oil treat ThermoWood – step by step

To maintain the wood’s beautiful color and extend its lifespan, it is recommended to oil treat ThermoWood regularly.

Here’s what you need:

  • WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner
  • WOCA Exterior Wood Oil (choose from several colors)
  • Broom
  • Hose
  • Garden sprayer or similar for applying cleaner
  • Brush or terrace cleaner
  • Brush, roller, or oil applicator

Step 1: Cleaning

Start by thoroughly cleaning the wood:

  1. Sweep the surface of the wood free of loose dirt
  2. Then make the wood thoroughly wet. Feel free to use a garden hose
  3. Mix Exterior Wood Cleaner with water – see mixing ratio on the packaging
Apply the cleaner in an even layer with a brush or spray. Let the cleaner work for 5 minutes.
  4. Scrub along the wood with a stiff brush or broom until the surface is clean.
Note! A machine can be beneficial for larger areas.
  5. Rinse the surface with plenty of water and let the wood dry for 1-2 days.
The wood must be completely dry before finishing with oil, paint, or impregnation – Max. 15% moisture.

If a completely smooth surface is desired, any raised wood fibers can be removed by sanding the wood with sandpaper before oiling.

Important: Let the wood dry completely (typically 24-48 hours) – Max. moisture 15%

Step 2: Application of oil

  1. Stir the oil thoroughly before and during use
  2. Apply the oil with an Oil Applicator or brush in an even, thin layer. Start with the end surfaces.
Note! The surface can be made extra durable by using a polishing machine.
  3. Note that it may take a few minutes before the wood appears oiled, as the water must first evaporate
Remove excess oil after a maximum of 5 minutes with clean cotton cloths, and be especially careful in joints and cracks
Depending on humidity and temperature, it will take 1-2 days for the oil to cure. During this period, the wood must not be exposed to water

Note:

  • Always treat new ThermoWood quickly after installation
  • Regular maintenance significantly extends the lifespan
  • Always test the oil on a small area first
  • Oil with color pigment may have slight transfer in the first few days after treatment
