Kingston, New York, is steeped in history. Its tree-lined streets are home to elegant Victorian residences, and the historic waterfront district radiates timeless charm. These homes are rich in character and nostalgia, but updating them for modern living often presents a unique challenge.

Striking the right balance between preserving authentic details and introducing a contemporary look requires thoughtful choices. In this renovation, WOCA played a key role in reimagining a Kingston Victorian home as a Nordic-inspired retreat – where timeless craftsmanship meets the clean, calming aesthetics of Scandinavian design.

The Vision – Where Heritage Meets Modern Living

From the outset, the homeowners were determined to protect the architectural details that define a Victorian home: Ornate woodwork, soaring ceilings, and generous windows. At the same time, they wanted a brighter, more functional interior that reflected their modern lifestyle.

Nordic design became the guiding inspiration. The objective was to create calm, light-filled spaces with a sense of simplicity and permanence, a home that honored its past while embracing a fresh, contemporary future.

Why WOCA?

Renowned for its expertise in woodcare, WOCA offers innovative solutions that enhance wood’s natural beauty while ensuring long-term durability. With a strong focus on sustainability and environmentally responsible products, WOCA was a natural fit for this project.
Its oils and treatments protect wood surfaces while allowing the material’s character to shine—an essential quality when working with historic elements that deserve both care and respect.

Restoring the Wood – The Soul of the Home

The heart of the renovation lay in restoring the home’s original wooden floors and millwork. Beautiful yet worn from decades of use, these surfaces needed revitalization without losing their authentic charm.

WOCA Diamond Oil Active was chosen for its deep penetration and exceptional durability. Ideal for high-traffic areas, it delivers a water- and stain-resistant surface while enhancing the wood’s grain and natural color. Its fast-drying properties also helped keep the renovation moving efficiently – an added benefit for homeowners eager to enjoy their updated home.

A Lighter, Nordic Floor Transformation

To achieve the hallmark Nordic look, bright, natural, and open, the floors became a focal point. The original dark-stained boards were sanded back, treated with WOCA Wood Lye to lighten the wood, and finished with Diamond Oil Active in Extra White.

The result was striking. Where the dark floors once absorbed light and visually compressed the rooms, the new finish reflected light beautifully, making the spaces feel larger, calmer, and more inviting. The light wood tones complemented the home’s historic details, delivering a result that felt both fresh and authentic.
